Most people don't spend much time thinking about graphite. But if you've charged an electric vehicle, used a smartphone, or benefited from clean energy fed into the grid, you've relied on it. Graphite is one of the most quietly essential materials in the modern energy transition — and the market is growing fast enough that "quietly essential" may not last much longer.
The global graphite market was valued at $13.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $22.1 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 8.7% from 2025 to 2030. That growth is being driven by a remarkable convergence of forces. EV adoption is pushing demand for graphite in battery anodes. Grid-scale energy storage systems need it. Electric arc furnace steelmaking consumes it. Semiconductor manufacturing, hydrogen fuel cells, nuclear reactors, and defense systems all depend on it. Few materials sit at so many critical intersections at once.
The technology side is equally interesting. Innovations like Coated Spheronized Purified Graphite for lithium-ion battery anodes, catalyst-free production methods capable of cutting carbon emissions by 60% (such as Imerys' SU-NERGY), and graphite-silicon hybrid anodes for next-generation batteries are reshaping what the material can do. Companies including GrafTech International, BTR New Material Group, Vianode, SGL Carbon, and Imerys are among those competing across this evolving landscape.
The challenge that looms over all of it is geography. China produced roughly 1,270 thousand tons of graphite in 2024, accounting for the majority of global supply — and Asia-Pacific as a whole holds a 60.1% share of the market. Geopolitical pressure is pushing producers in North America, Europe, and beyond to develop alternative supply chains, but that transition is slow, expensive, and complicated by serious environmental and regulatory hurdles.
