5 Important Investments Deals of the 2010s

You know the saying, “In order to know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been”? That goes for a lot of things in life...including predicting what will happen in the investments market in the new decade.

Below we’ve listed the major mergers and acquisitions that occurred in the last half of the 2010s—so that investment professionals can see what’s happening in the investments industry now and where it might be headed in the future.

M&A activity in the investment market have remained robust in the last 4 years. Some of the most notable deals include those done by:

- Deutsche Boerse
- London Stock Exchange
- TIAA-CREF
- Henderson Group PLC
- Goldman Sachs
- Morgan Stanley
- Blackstone Group

Now, let’s take a closer look at the M&A activity of the last half of the decade.

Deutsche Boerse Merged with London Stock Exchange
In March 2016, Deutsche Boerse agreed to merge with London Stock Exchange in an all share deal valued about $31.5 billion. Following this merger, Deutsche Boerse shareholders hold 54.4% of the combined entity. Deutsche Boerse is a provider of trading and securities services. The company offers securities and derivatives trading, clearing, transaction settlement, and development and operation of electronic trading systems.

Joint Venture between, NorthStar Asset Management Group Inc., Colony Capital, Inc. and NorthStar Realty Finance Corp
In June 2016, NorthStar Asset Management Group Inc., Colony Capital, Inc. and NorthStar Realty Finance Corp agreed to merge into a real estate investment management company which was named as Colony Northstar. The deal was worth $11.3 billion. According to the deal, NSAM shareholders own 32.85%, Colony Shareholders 33.25% and NRF shareholders 33.90% shares of the company.

TIAA-CREF Acquired Nuveen Investments
In April 2014, TIAA-CREF acquired Nuveen Investments from Madison Dearborn Partners LLC. The deal was worth $6.25 billion. TIAA-C, through this deal, which included $4.56 billion in outstanding debt added $221 billion in assets and now has $800 billion in funds under management. Madison Dearborn got about $1.7 billion from this deal.

Henderson Group PLC Acquired Janus Capital Group Inc.
In October 2016, Henderson Group PLC agreed to acquire Janus Capital Group Inc. for $2.6 billion. The market value of the combined merger is expected to be $6 billion. Under this trans-Atlantic deal, Henderson and Janus shareholders will own 57% and 43% respectively. Dai-ichi Life is one notable shareholder of Janus Capital.

Blackstone Group and Corsair Capital Acquired First Eagle Investment Management
In July 2015, Blackstone Group and Corsair Capital agreed to acquire a majority stake in First Eagle Investment Management. The deal was worth $4 billion. According to the terms, another private equity firm, TA Associates, which had 25% stake in First Eagle sold its entire stake.
